Welcome Honorary Graveyard Gang Member!
In 1990, six young adults fulfilled a childhood dream of doing the spookiest thing anyone can do - spend Halloween night on a graveyard! Only one of them became "Keeper of the Flame", so to speak, and that was me.
I wasn't actually voted "Keeper". For some reason, I only have two photos of that night: one of Cherokee Hall (left) in a moment of horror, and the other of his brother Chris and good friend, Tim, by a popular tombstone monument (below). It was Cherokee who audio-recorded the whole event with a tiny micro-cassette recorder. (How brilliant was that! You can see the recorder in his left hand). He made me a copy of the tape, and I have treasured it ever since.

Why did we pick the graveyard we did? Because it fit all the criterion for such seasoned graveyard sitters as ourselves: (1) it was close by (2) it was high on a mountain and (3) it was close by. Okay, that's only two reasons, but all graveyards are spooky at night, and where there's dead people, there has to be ghosts ... right?
Well, we didn't see any ghosts, ghouls or zombies, so we let our imaginary go to work. What was that sound? Is that shadow moving over there? Who's got the McDonald's burger bag? Ahhh, there's nothing like your imagination to get things going!

It was one of the greatest times I have ever experienced, and things like that you just want to share with others. We were clean (for the most part), sober and respectful the entire night. No beer cans tossed everywhere or turning over gravestones or any asinine, punk antics! Just pure, good, clean fun! I think it shows on the recording.
Of course ... I'm not sure how the ghosts felt about it all.
The graveyard in daylight.
